A Brief History of Wado-Ryu

Wado-Ryu Karate was created by Hidenori Otsuka. It's name means "Way of peace or harmony".

Hidenori Otsuka was born in 1892. He studied Jiu-Jitsu in his youth but did not train in Karate until he was 30.

He found the Shotokan form of Karate too restrictive and after 10 years of study founded his own style. This blended Jiu-Jitsu with Karate which gives Wado an approach built on speed and grace of movement rather than brute strength.

St. Neots Wado-Ryu Karate Club is based on the original principles set out by Hidenori Otsuka.
